It’s pretty tough to believe that Asher James is already a year old. (It seems like I just wrote this.) To celebrate, we had a circus first birthday party with a few friends and family. Asher loves to give us his ROAR, so we went with a tiger as inspiration for his first birthday bash. Our life is kind of a circus, so why not embrace it?
Circus snacks included: Circus peanuts, freshly-popped popcorn, Barnum’s Animal Crackers, in-shell peanuts, lollypops, way too much candy, and cupcakes — of course! We held the party at noon on a Saturday, and kept it simple with hot dogs on the grill.
We borrowed a friend’s popcorn machine, which made the party seem so much more special! (And made the house smell amazing. My dad is a self-described popcorn expert, so that was his duty for the party.)
Little touches, like cute paper straws(I got mine on Target clearance!) made the party fun. Birthdays were always very celebrated in my family growing up. Jonny and I set limited birthday budgets, and have also intentionally set limits when it comes to what gifts we give and how much we give. But — I love putting time and love into birthday celebrations, because it’s just one little way to show how big I love these guys in my life.
We used plastic popcorn bins to hold chips and other snacks. They were super affordable, and added to the fun. We pre-filled some of the popcorn bags with freshly-popped popcorn, so there wouldn’t be a long line at the popcorn machine! (Isn’t it the little things that keep a party running smoothly?)
There’s just something about sipping from glass bottles that seems way cooler than drinking a can of soda. Plus, it gave me an excuse to use the cute straws. We also set out apple juice for the littles.
Our paper decorations are from the Fisher Price Circus 1st Birthday Room Decorating Kit. I normally don’t like pre-made birthday decor, but I thought this stuff was pretty cute, and we added enough of our own touches (like a super-easy streamer circus tent) to make it feel original.
We also bought the Fisher Price Circus 1st Birthday Four Piece Molded Candle Set, which worked well for the cupcake tower. So. Much. Sugar.
Since Asher likes tigers, we chose orange frosting with black stripes for the chocolate cupcakes. Normally, I would have made them myself, but I started getting a little carried away with the decorations, and ran out of time! Thankfully, a dozen cupcakes at our local bakery wasn’t too pricey.
One is at such a fun age, and every day we see more of Asher’s funny, sweet personality. He is Joseph’s shadow copies his big brother’s every move. (Except walking — Asher is taking steps, but hasn’t quite mastered it yet. When he does, I really will be exhausted keeping up with those boys!)
It probably doesn’t come to anyone’s surprise — Asher demolished his cupcake. His over-the-top ringmaster hat came in the same set of the Fisher Price set. We weren’t going to buy it, but my mom put it on Asher when we were shopping, and he fell in love with it and didn’t want to take it off. His grandma caved! I’m kind of glad she did, because it’s pretty adorable.
Asher is such a special little guy, and we had a sweet time celebrating him with people who love him almost as much as we do. (You can read about his entry into the world here.)
