cultivating a happy mother's day

I’ve been wanting a vegetable garden for awhile, and this weekend, Jonny and Joseph are building me a custom vegetable garden for Mother’s Day. It has been so sweet to see them work together, and it has really been a labor of love. And Joseph has been really fascinated by the tomato thingies. (Thingies. That’s the best word I can come up with. Ohmyword, pray for my thumb to turn green, you guys.)

Our garden is going to be 12×6, and stocked with veggies! I can’t wait to tell you about all the goodness we plan to plant and grow. It’s going to be an adventure!

Jonny grew up being “forced” (his words!) to garden, and he doesn’t really enjoy it, which makes the gift extra special. He’s still working on his thesis for his Master’s degree (it’s crunch time!), so all of the time he’s putting into making this garden special means a lot to me. (He’s doing all the hard work and I’m inside blogging. I married a good one.)

While his daddy and big brother have been working away, Asher has been known to be spotted attempting to eat rocks. (He has mostly been hanging inside with me — napping while I write this!)

Who needs a tiller when you have a Joseph? I’ve heard that the soil in this area of the Midwest is super fertile, so hopefully we are able to get our garden to grow. I’ll be blogging the process and sharing our adventures in beginner gardening. And hopefully, we’ll have lots of homegrown veggies to share!

Happy Mother’s Day weekend! Any beginner tips for a novice gardener like myself?

  1. This is so awesome! I really want to make a garden, but I tend to kill things (everything) I bring home. Except kids! Woohoo! The Hubs reminded me that fact counts a ton!
