style inspiration for the rest of us

style inspiration for average girls fashion blog

My sweet, creative, and stylish friend Katie, along with two of her best friends, recently launched a new blog, 3 Average Girls, and I can’t wait to tell you about it — well, or let her tell you about it. It’s a fashion blog for the rest of us — for the real world ladies who don’t have a giant budget or a Barbie body — and really, isn’t that most of us?

My sweet friend Katie, who goes by “The Classy Lady” on her new style blog, 3 Average Girls. Here, she shows how she styles the Moto jacket from Express. She was happiest keepin’ the Moto soft and understated. She paired this wardrobe staple with a red, flowy dress from The Loft and black wedges from Payless. Katie says, “To replicate this look, search for flowing fabric. The important factor here is the dress cinches in at the smallest part of you. Finding the right dress and accent point can make any frame more hour glass. Remember, simplicity is key to this look. Over accessorizing can take away from the beauty of the dress and the wearer. Instead, choose a dark smokey eye (the perfect accent). Adding the Moto allows this dress to go from dinner at a cafe to drinks at a pub.”

What inspired you to create 3 Average Girls (3AG)? It has been less of a journey and more of a realization. We knew we loved fashion, and we also knew we loved to share each other’s clothes —  despite very different styles. But it wasn’t until we started to search the blog world for style inspiration that we realized very few sites for average sized women existed. Sure, there were sites for stunning plus size women. There were also plenty of blogs featuring body (and budget) envying women with abundant fashion advice. But…where was the blog for the average girls? Out of this question, 3 Average Girls was born. The ladies of 3AG want to be a place for all average women to go to when looking searching for wardrobe basics, beauty tips, or creative ways to rock whatever style and figure they best identify with.

The Fashionista: She was ready to embrace the edgy look for the moto and decided to pair the it with a white and metallic cheetah print tanktop from Walmart (yes, Walmart!), black leggings, Michael Kors bag, and metallic Sperry's. To replicate this look, pull out your reliable black leggings. If you are not comfortable wearing leggings as pants, like the classy lady, choose a pair black jeggings instead. Again, layering is key. Many average women want to smooth things out when wearing a tight tank top; so, layering tanks are invaluable. We love the BKE Extra-long layering tanks from Buckle. When choosing the accent tank, look for a bold design that draws your eye to the center (which has the plus of thinning your frame). The Moto is used here like a blazer.
Rachel is known as “The Hipster” on 3 Average Girls. Here, she paired the jacket with a simple heathered gray and white striped tee from Forever 21, New York and Company dark skinnies, knitted scarf from Old Navy, and Payless gray canvas shoes. She says to replicate this look, plan on layering. “Any basic layering tank top does wonders for elongating your frame. Look for dark wash skinny’s which are fantastic at making your legs look lean! Any striped shirt will work, but look for a width that you feel comfortable with. Remember, you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on leather. There are perfectly suitable and adorable non-leather alternatives out there!”

So, who is the average girl? The average girl is amazing! Let’s not down play her awesomeness by misunderstanding the title. She is the type of woman who works hard, plays hard, and wants to look good doing it. She has areas on her body that she wants to hide and parts that she knows how to work. She is inspired by Pinterest, but wants to make the looks function in real life, on her body. The average girl is looking for other average girls to show off their affordable fashion. The average girl is you and me!

Fashionista Moto
Michelle goes by “The Fashionista” on the blog. She was ready to embrace the edgy look for the Moto and decided to pair the it with a white and metallic cheetah print tank from Walmart (yes, Walmart!), black leggings, Michael Kors bag, and metallic Sperry’s. To replicate this look, she says to pull out your reliable black leggings. “If you aren’t comfortable wearing leggings as pants, like the classy lady, choose a pair black jeggings instead. The Moto is used here like a blazer.”

Who do you identify with? Maybe the best part of 3AG is that it brings three very different women together. Rachel, “the hipster,” is a college student with a relaxed style and spunky personality. She gives advice on how to layer, be budget friendly, and prioritize. Michelle, “the fashionista,” is a business woman who is up on all trends. She’s likely to share wisdom about beauty tips, making trends work, and rocking fabulous accessories. Katie, “the classy lady,” is a teacher with energy to spare and tons of drive. You can find her dispensing inspiration about simplicity, making trends work in a timeless way, and accentuating what you’ve got.

The best websites + blogs fill a need and connect with an audience that no one else is reaching, and this style blog really is doing that! The ladies show how to style pieces in a down-to-earth way, showing how trends look on real bodies (love their ‘How she wore it Wednesday‘ posts, and, of course, how to get the look for less. Head over and show them some love!
