when mama leaves the nest: influence conference edition

Influence Conference link up blogger

Who doesn’t love an awkward selfie every once in a while? I’m packing up and heading to Indianapolis to attend The Influence Conference at the end of this month, and I’m linking this little post with other attendees as a chance to introduce ourselves and get connected before our weekend away together!

So, hi! I’m Kayla.

I love telling stories. I’ve been a magazine staff writer and a newspaper journalist, and now I’m a freelance editor so I can stay home with my two wild and free little boys.

The kids: I’m a happy and caffeinated mama of Joseph, who just turned four and joined our family via international adoption by way of Nigeria. He’s funny and sweet and smart and I love him to pieces. (God is teaching me a lot through mothering him — he has sickle cell and I’m learning to relinquish control I think I have over my kiddos’ health and lives.) Asher is 18-months and he’s equally funny and sweet and smart. We’ve transitioned from baby to full-on toddler and it’s so fun seeing him explore and learn.

The husband: I’m happily hitched to Jonny, a shaggy-haired pastor who loves coffee just as much as I do. We’ve been married for six years and together for more. He continually pushes me to think about the Kingdom of God in new and big ways. I love doing life with him.

Me: I’m passionate about loving God + loving others. I want encourage women to be brave and to love fiercely. (You can learn more about that here.) I like telling stories of redemption and renewal. I really like connecting over a cup of coffee. I like laughing in that hold-your-sides kind of way and if I give you a hard time that probably means I want to be friends. I’m thankful for grace and humbled by a Jesus who gives more than I can fathom. (You can learn more about me here.)

Part of the conference I’m most excited about: This is so tough! I’m thrilled to hear the speakers, who are primarily women who have bravely been chasing after Jesus in real and tangible ways. I’ve been following many of their blogs for a while, and I’m so excited to see them in person! I’m also looking forward to the workshops. But I think most importantly, I’m looking forward to the conversations — to connecting with other like-minded women who are chasing after their God-given passions to use their influence to make much of Jesus.

What I’m not leaving home without: Okay, obvi, my iPhone. Though it’s three years old and barely holds a battery and the back is shattered, it’ll be my lifeline to connecting to my little tribe when I’m away from them. I’m going to miss them like crazy, but I know that this time away will help recharge my batteries, too.

I’m honored to be sponsored by Prosperity Candle, and I’ll be telling the story of their fair-trade candles hand-poured by women who are refugees now living in the U.S. (Annnnd they’re sending me with some absolutely lovely mini candles to give away. So, please come find me and we’ll hook you up!)

I’ll also have some new Minted Foil-Pressed Business Cards, which I just ordered + I’m super excited about.

And, I’ll be packing something black and white for the Thursday night black and white party. (Check here for inspiration for what to wear!)

Basically I’ll be loading up the diaper bag with candles and business cards and dresses and lip gloss. 🙂

So, are you going to the Influence Conference? I’ve never attended anything like this, but I’m excited to see what God has in store!

Influence Conference

In case you’re not familiar with the conference, here’s how they put it:

We are so excited about the 2014 conference, being held September 25-27 in Indianapolis, Indiana!! If you’ve ever wondered how or why the Lord was going to use you in your home, work, community, or online – Influence is a fantastic place to connect and learn. We believe that God has given you influence right where you are, for one purpose: to make much of Him. At Influence we’re going to dig into the common thread of all of us – the Good News. We plan on doing a little teaching, talking, sharing, and celebrating concerning the ways He might want to use you on the individual platforms He’s given.

If you’re a blogger or social media pro who wants to grow in her ability to leverage the internet to make much of Jesus–and help support your family’s ability to act and minister – Influence will be that conference.   We’ll have professionals who make real and consistent money ready to teach you how to be all about the Gospel and support your family’s ability to spread it.  If you’re a gal who cares little about the internet, we believe Influence is for you too and you’ll be blessed beyond measure by coming.

We have some speakers lined up who are wise and precious and cannot wait to dig a variety of topics in life and strategy – from marriage to branding, forgiveness to ebooks. We want to talk about it all.

If you’ve always wanted a community of women, but never felt you fit in at Christian conferences before, come knowing you’ll be embraced and all your charm and quirk will be loved!

    1. Thanks, Meg! I swear I was just pregnant and chasing a 2 year old…days are long but these months/years are short, huh? Looking forward to meeting you, too! 🙂

  1. I was there last year!! You’re in for an awesome time, that’s for sure. I couldn’t go this year–it would be a bit too far to travel, but I know you’ll be surrounded by some awesome women.

    1. I was thinking it would be no big deal to drive, until I realized it was more than 10 hours away! But travel plans have worked out and I’m looking forward to it! It’s so good to hear you had a good experience! 🙂

    1. I was the same way last year! Enjoy your newborn snuggles — those days are long but the cliche is right, it does go so fast! (Though, I’m sure you’ve already discovered that with your oldest.)

    1. Yay! Can’t wait. I’m a little nervous about leaving my family — with travel it makes me gone about 4 full days — eek! Trusting that God will tame my mama nerves. Also, I’m like you and looking forward to sleep that’s not interrupted by children! 🙂
