I didn’t grow up with sisters. I have one younger brother, and spent my childhood bossing him around, convincing him to play Barbies.
I always wondered what it’d be like to have a sister. Could I borrow clothes from her? Would we braid each other’s hair, a la Little House on the Prairie? And let’s be honest — the thought has crossed my mind — would I be the cuter sister, or would she? (Kidding! Mostly.)
Siblings are such a gift (which is one of the reasons we’re adopting again!). When I married Jonny, I inherited a great, big, crazy crew of siblings. He has three sisters, and two married brothers. That’s a lot of sisters-in-law, if you’re counting! It is so fun to get grafted into a family. Family weaves together personalities and perspectives that we might otherwise miss out on.
I’m thrilled to be sneaking in a getaway to Galena, Illinois with my “sisters.” We’ve been planning the ladies-only trip for more than a year, and I can’t believe the circled spot on the calendar is finally here! Galena is a charming, historic small town spot tucked away in the hills of Illinois.
We’re renting out a bed & breakfast owned by a sweet little old lady and we’ve had a spa day scheduled as soon as we knew this was happening. (Like…a real spa! With pedicures! And massages! Yes, these are foreign words to a young mama and I’m thrilled to add them to my vocab.) There are antique stores and quaint shops and charming cafes and sprawling vineyards and I’m just so excited. (And trying not to have that mommy guilt that seems to creep in when I travel.)
But mostly, I’m excited to connect with women that I don’t get to see very often. We’re traveling from four states and meeting in Galena to spend a weekend together. And with our hairsprays and heels we’re also bringing our stories. Stories of celebration, stories of disappointment, stories of hope.
I’m not sure if anyone will braid my hair (I’m sure going to lobby for it), but I am ready for good old-fashioned R&R with some awesome women I get to call sisters. (Also, can we all just agree that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s new movie aptly titled Sisters is going to be amazing? As you were.)
